The story of HEROES OF SHE
"It has become a question whether we are justified in withholding from the world an account of a phenomenon which we believe to be of unparalleled interest"
Just over a year ago, a band was formed from the musical talents of four inhabitants of Lancaster in the North West of England. The group’s beginnings lay in the Hammond/Drums duo of James Mackie, previously a member of Madness and The Selecter, and the fabulous beats of his longtime buddy, John Elles. Together they were a force to be reckoned with and played with a wild abandon… but something was missing…
"‘Sit’ said She, pointing to the couch. I was too much involved in the web of her fatal fascinations to say her no, even if I had wished, which I did not."
Girls. To add to this heady mix of Hammond and drums came the vocals of Amy Worth and Helen Longworth. Both actresses; uncannily similarly named and themselves friends of old, they relished the thought of adding to such a vibrant and exciting sound, creating a band with two strong female lead singers and also of using their songwriting and vocal ability to create something completely new and Heroic. Now they needed a name.
"'Who is She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed?’ I asked curiously"
"We followed to the head of the cave, till at last we stood before the spot where the great pulse beat. And as we went we became sensible of a wild and splendid exhilaration, we laughed aloud in the lightness of our hearts and the divine intoxication of our brains."
Heroes of She. James, John, Amy and Helen retreated into The Kelvinator, a fridge in the basement of their local flower shop, to write and rehearse, developing an exciting set of vibrant songs with lyrics that said something, which they rocked out in many local venues; in the RADA Bar in London and at the opening of ‘Infusion’, the new, wild rollercoaster at the famous Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The crowds went wild.
"‘Hulloa, old fellow' he called out, ‘are you there?' This is getting interesting, is it not?"
Then into The Kelvinator came the cool, calm and collected fedora-donned local businessman Jonathan Denby and between him and the four band members, Independent Record Label Northern Music was born for the purpose of promoting the band.
"'Now are you ready?' I said, as people do when they are going to fire a mine"
And here they are, Heroes of She. They have recorded and mixed an album of 13 songs and are forging into 2008 with the backing of acclaimed North West radio station ‘The Bay’, access to a Ford Thunderbird and with plans for larger gigs and the release of their first single early in the year.
